NCAA Women’s Swimming: Stanford Defeats USC

STANFORD, CA – Junior Gabrielle Rose (Memphis, TN/St. Mary’s Episcopal HS) won two events to lead second-ranked Stanford (6-2 overall, 3-1 in the Pac-10) to a 166.5-133.5 dual-meet victory over No. 5 USC (5-2, 2-2) at deGuerre Pool. Stanford has now won 39 straight dual meets at deGuerre Pool dating back to the 1987-88 season, and is 38-0 at home under 11th-year head coach Richard Quick.

USC opened the meet by capturing the 400 medley relay, and held the lead through the first eight events. Stanford would have taken the lead after the fourth event, the 100 backstroke, but junior Catherine Fox (Shawnee Mission, KS/Bishop Miege HS), who won the race easily, was disqualified for swimming under water beyond 15 meters. Stanford took the lead for good when Rose won the 100 freestyle, with her Cardinal teammates also placing second, third and fifth. Rose also won the 200 freestyle.
