Long Course YMCA Nationals Kick Off in Maryland; Weaner Wonderful -- July 29, 2004 One of the most exciting features of this meet is the tremendously enthusiastic crowd of 1,200 teenage athletes as they cheer on their teams.

COLLEGE PARK, MD, July 28. LONG Course Summer YMCA Nationals reflect year-round excellence in Y programs. In the same town that hosted last summer’s ConocoPhillips National Championships from USA Swimming, and Michael Phelps’ 200 IM world record, the summer YMCA swimmers are strutting their stuff according to reports from G. Michael Gobrect at the scene.

The women’s 100 backstroke was a world-class battle of 15 year old stars. Lauren English, Montclair-NJ and Tricia Weaner, West Shore-PA were both semi-finalists in the event at the recent U.S. Olympic Trials, with English ending in 9th and Weaner 14th. Despite such fine placement for mid-teenagers at the trials, their motivation must have been higher for Y-Nationals as both improved their times significantly in Maryland. Weiner was victorious at 1:02.73, a time that would have placed her 4th after the semi-final in Long Beach. English swam 1:03.02, nearly 1/3 second drop from Long Beach
