Mew, Tait, Davies Sparkle at British Champs -- July 25, 2004
MANCHESTER, England, UK, July 25. DARREN Mew, James Gibson, Gregor Tait and David Davies all turned in sparkling times at the British National Championships, held in Manchester, July 16-19. But Greece's Ionnas Kokkodis stole the show with a swim in the 400 IM that vaults him into the ranks of potential finalists in Athens.
With lEss than a month to go before the Athens games begin, the 32-member british Olympic team swam in the meet's first three days but was given the last daay off by National Team Director Bill Sweetenham.
Darren Mew out-touched rival James Gibson in both the 50 and 100m breast, clocking 28.12 to Gibson's 28.18 in the 50 and 1:01.03 to 1:01.78 in the 100, with Chris Cook right behind at 1:01.86.
Tait took the 200 back in 1:59.35, while Davies, the fast-rising young Welchman, won the 400/800 freestyle double in 3:52.35 and 7:57.72.
Kokkodis was also aa double winner, taking the 200 IM in 2:03.08 and the 400 in an eye-opening 4:18.10.
The times were not as fast on the women's side, though Rebecca Cooke looked sharp in taking the 400/1500 frees in 4:12.17 and 16:30.76 and the 400 IM in 4:51.96.
The best women's swim was Alison Sheppard's 25.32 for the 50 free.
