Dana Kirk Takes 200 Fly at US Trials, Joins Sister Tara on US Olympic Team

By Phillip Whitten

LONG BEACH, Calif., July 11. STANFORD’S Dana Kirk struggled on the final 50 meters of the 200m fly, but with every painful stroke her goal came closer to reality.

Summoning her last ounce of will the 20 year-old from Tacoma, Washington, stroked to the wall, touching first in 2:08.86. With that touch, she made Olympic history, joining older sister Tara as the first sisters to swim on the same US Olympic team.

Kirk split a painful 1:00.19 – 1:08.67, as her 35.45 for the final 50 was bettered by four other swimmers. But she had built a monster lead and touched more than a second ahead of Kaitlin Sandeno, who came storming back from fourth place at the final turn to earn her fourth berth on the 2004 US Olympic squad. Third place went to 19 year-old Whitney Myers, of Tucson Ford, in another pr, 2:10.76. Talented, versatile and ready to rumble, Myers looks to be a star of the near future.

For Misty Hyman, 2000 Olympic gold medallist, there would be no miracle tonight. Hyman swam an aggressive race, turning in 1:01.51 at the 100-meter mark, but she faded down the home stretch and finished eighth.
