Justice Department Investigation Surrounding 2002 Olympics

With the U.S. Justice Department beginning a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding Salt Lake City’s successful bid for the 2002 Olympics, the other three investigations could end up taking a back seat. None of the other three: the IOC, the USOC and an independent ethics panel appointed by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, have subpoena power. SLOC has promised cooperation with all. Dick Pound, IOC vice president and chairman of the IOC inquiry, said he has no indication the U.S. Justice Department investigation will impede the IOC inquiry, which is focused on the actions of IOC members.
