Egerszegi Announces Retirement -- August 21, 1996

Krisztina Egerszegi, Hungary's five-time Olympic gold medalist, announced her retirement from world-class competition. She said she would continue swimming for another year to allow her body to taper down, but she would not be competing in any future major competitions. Hungarian president, Arpad Goncz, awarded Egerszegi the nation's Cross of Honor, recognizing her Olympic accomplishments.
