Jamaica’s Atkinson Girls, Trinidad’s Bovell Boys Dominate at Caribbean Champs

KINGSTON, Jamaica, July 3. JAMAICAN Olympian Janelle Atkinson captured gold in the women's 18 and over 400m individual medley in a time of 5:12.18 at the 15th Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships (CISC) at the National Stadium Pool today in Kingston, Jamaica. Her national team-mate Angela Chuck was not far behind taking silver in 5:16.95.

Alia Atkinson (no relation to Janelle) and Brad Hamilton were also winners, in the 15-17 100m freestyle and 13-14 200m freestyle respectively at press time. Alia finished in 58.52 and Hamilton clocked 1:59.80.

In the boys 15-17 100m freestyle, Trinidad and Tobago's Olympic-bound Nicholas Bovell won in a record-breaking 52.25. OLder brother George Bovell, a medal hopeful in the 200 IM, cruised to gold in the men's 100m free after completing a tough 6,000 meter workout.

The boys' 15-17 400m individual medley went to Vincent Van Rutten of the Netherland Antilles in 4:54.00. Van Rutten has won the Bonaire Eco-Challenge Swim the lats two years.

In water polo, Jamaica's men were dominant in their 9-5 victory over Puerto Rico but were upset by Curacao, 10-9. Jamaica's women crushed Trinidad 12-6 but were torpedoed 9-3 by Puerto Rico.
