World's Deepest Pool Opens in Belgium -- June 3, 2004

BRUSSELS, Belgium, June 2. EVERY swimmer knows that the deeper the pool, the faster it is. If that's so, say good-bye to the IUPUI pool in Indianapolis and hello to "Nemo 33," in Uccle, Belgium.

"Nemo 33" is the name of what is believed to be the world's deepest pool, which opened in Uccle, Belgium, according to a report in the adUtch newspaper Expatica.

Nemo 33 is, appropriately 33 meters deep, or just over 108 feet in depth. According to the Dutch news report, it will not be used to hold races but "for scientific research and by people who want to learn to dive."

The pool will be heated by solar energy to a temperature of around 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).

Nemo 33 cost EUR 3.2 million (about US$3 million) to build and contains 2.5 million liters of water.
