Auburn Holds 98-Point Lead After Day One of Men's NCAA Championships -- March 25, 2004
EAST MEADOW, New York, March 25. THE Auburn Tigers were heavy favorites coming into this meet, but no one -- not even Auburn coach David Marsh -- imagined his charges would be so dominant.
Auburn won three of the five swimming events contested, setting two world records and a world-best time in the process. In the 400 medley relay, one of the two events the Tigers didn't win, they finished second, well under the previous world mark. In their weak event, the 500 free, they placed a swimmer in the A final.
The Tigers were so overwhelming that Coach Marsh even allowed himself a small smile. "This was a very good day for us," he understated.
Auburn tallied 211 points, 98 more than Stanford with 113. Texas and Arizona are tied for third with 110. Thirty teams scored points this day.
