COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 20. THIS kid, this Kara Lynn Joyce kid, is good, and I mean gooood!
And as she gains in confidence with every race, she’s getting better. And faster.
The Georgia freshman, already an American record-holder in the 100 free, simply put it to her seven 54-second competitors. Right from the start.
Joyce turned in 25.59 seconds, half a second ahead of her nearest pursuer. Then she powered home with the fastest second 50. It added up to 53.15 seconds, a new NCAA and US Open record.
South Carolina’s Jennifer Van Assen, having a spectacular meet, came from sixth at the 50 to grab the silver in 54.38.
