Women's NCAAs, Day 3 Prelims: Arizona Frosh Whitney Myers Tops the 200 Fly Field -- March 20, 2004

By Phillip Whitten

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 20.

200 meter butterfly
The 200 fly shapes up as a confrontation among USC’s Kaitlin Sandeno, Stanford’s Dana Kirk and Georgia’s Mary Descenza.

Heat 1. Cal’s Natalie Griffith wins in 2:12.99

Heat 2. USC’s Marisa Kozak, swimming in lane 7, takes the race in 2:12.67.

Heat 3. Arizona’s Emily Mason, swimming third most of the way, overtakes the leaders on the final lap to touch in 2:08.93, with Mary Descenza 5-hundredths back. Mason’s splits: 1:01.57-1:07.36.

Heat 4. In an instant replay of the previous heat, UCLA’s Kim Vandenberg overtakes Kirk to finish in 2:08.07, with Kirk almost a second back at 2:09.03. Vaandenberg’s splits: 1:01.12-1:06.95.

Heat 5. Arizona’s gutsy freshman uses a different strategy to best top-seed Kaitlin Sandeno: she takes it to her rival from the start. Sandeno makes a move on the final 50, but it’s too little, too late. They record the event’s top two times: 2:07.30 and 2:07.69. Myers’ splits: 1:01.01-1:07.29.

A cut: 2:09.96; B cut: 2:2.67
