UNC Men’s Swimming Breezes to Nike Cup Title

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The University of North Carolina men’s swim team completed an impressive three days of competition as it doubled its margin of victory over the rest of the field in winning the 13th annual Nike Cup Swimming and Diving Championships at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium.

Coach Frank Comfort’s men, winner of six straight ACC titles, ran away from the rest of the 12-team field, winning with 1,016 points. Clemson finished second with 500 points.

On the women’s side, Clemson established itself as an early favorite to claim the ACC title in 1999 as it won by a wide margin over Carolina. The Tigers finished with 1,047.5 points, outpointing the Tar Heels, who finished with 724 points.

North Carolina freshman Katie Hathaway from Matthews, N.C. had one of the two most impressive swims of the evening’s competition as she won the Nike Cup title in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:15.09. That time broke the Atlantic Coast Conference record of 2:15.85 set by Lindsay Schubert of Virginia earlier this year. The previous UNC record in the event was 2:15.99 set by Erika Acuff in 1997.
