Women’s NCAAs, Day 2: Natalie Takes the 100 Back to Four-peat, Sets NCAA Mark

By Phillip Whitten

100 meter backstroke
COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 19. WHEN she won the 100 fly, Cal’s Natalie Coughlin became only the seventh person to win the same event at the NCAAs in four consecutive years. She also became the first person to four-peat the 100 fly.

Now she was attempting to duplicate that feat for the 100 back. The world record-holder and top qualifier, Nat was favored to do just that.

She did not disappoint. Taking the lead at the start with her characteristic underwater 15 meters, she was challenged only by Auburn’s Margaret Hoelzer, still dripping wet from her upset victory in the 200 free.

Still, for Hoelzer, it was like trying to stop the tide.

Coughlin split 27.86 – 29.65 to touch home in 57.51, an NCAA record and the world’s fastest time this year, but off her own world mark of 56.71. Hoelzer followed in 58.54.
