Women’s NCAAs, Day 2: Auburn’s Margaret Hoelzer — Outside Smoke! — Takes the 200 Free in NCAA Record Time

By Phillip Whitten

200 meter freestyle
COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 19. LAST year Auburn’s Heather Kemp and North Carolina’s Jessi Perruquet tied for the title in the 200 free. Tonight they were back: Kemp in lane 5, Perruquet, a fast closer in lane 7. Top qualifier was South Carolina’s Jennifer Van Assen. Which one would win?

The answer: None of the above.

Over in lane one, backstroker Margaret Hoelzer decided to go for it.

Good choice!

It was classic Outside Soke.

Unseen by the competitors battling in the middle of the pool, Hoelzer simply took off. Leading all the way, she split 56.68 at the 100 and touched home in an NCAA record 1:56.16, one-and-a-half seconds ahead of fast-closing Van Assen. Perruquet was third in 1:57.96.

The old NCAA mark was 1:57.33 by Georgia's Maritza Correia.
