Women’s NCAAS, Day Two: Auburn Tigers Roar, set American Record in the 200m Medley Relay

200 meter medley relay
COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 19. DAY Two of the Women’s NCAA Division I Championships is under way now after a stunningly beautiful, crystal-clear rendition of the national anthem by 12 year-old Andrea Young of nearby Bryan, that brought sustained applause by the appreciative crowd.

The 200 medley relay figured to be a battle among the usual suspects: top-seeded Georgia, SEC rival Auburn and Arizona.

At the end, it was Auburn’s Margaret Hoelzer, who split 25.67 for the fly, followed by relay Wonder Woman, Eileen Coparropa (24.18), who brought the Tigers from behind to touch in a new NCAA/US Open mark of 1:49.02, breaking the old record of 1:49.23 by Cal four years ago. The time just missed the world best of 1:48.31 set by Sweden in 2000.

Georgia, at 1:49.20, was also under the old record, while Stanford — which had the lead at 175 meters — was third in 1:49.80.
