Women’s NCAA Champs: Georgia’s Kara Lynn Joyce Takes the 50 Free

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 18. IN prelims, Georgia freshman Kara Lynn Joyce set an NCAA, American and US Open record of 24.21, as seven women broke 25 seconds. The final, with Auburn’s four determined Tigers filling half the lanes, promised to be super-fast.

It was. Showing poise beyond her 18 years, Joyce used a fast turn to take a tiny lead from Auburn’s Coparropa, a Panamanian. At the wall it was Joyce – the pride of Ann Arbor – in 24.24, Coparropa, 24.41 in a finish that looked a lot closer than the electronic clock said it was.
