Tulane Swimming Wraps Up Regular-Season With Win Over Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo, February 8. TULANE Freshman Leslie Christian won the 500-yard freestyle and set a lifetime-best time in the 1,000-yard freestyle for the second consecutive meet as the Tulane University swim team defeated Conference USA foe Saint Louis, 163-131, in the regular-season finale Sunday afternoon at the Simon Recreation Center.

The Green Wave essentially walked took the pool trailing 32-0 since Tulane does not yet field a diving program, but the girls in Olive and Blue responded by winning 10 of the 14 events to claim the programs first-ever Conference USA victory. With the win, Tulane concludes the regular-season with a 13-3 record, including a 1-0 mark in C-USA play and a 13-2 showing in dual-meet activity.

“This was a great win for us,” head coach Daniella Irle said. “Saint Louis is a good conference team, but our team came out once again and showed some real character. We had some strong swims, and some breakthrough swims which we have been waiting for all year. They came out fighting, got a lead and stayed ahead to win the meet. They never gave up, and that’s really been a defining characteristic of this team all year long.”

Christian, who posted a time of 10:23.94 in the 1,000 free on Jan. 30 against Spring Hill College, trimmed over half a second off her previous lifetime-best time to win the event with a time of 10:23.26. She also posted a 5:06.53 in the 500 free to win that event as well.

Other individual winners for the Green Wave were Taylor Emerson, Monica Jones, Katherine McCoy, Linda McEachrane, Nicole Taheri and Megan Underwood. Emerson won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.83, and Jones emerged victorious in the 200 fly with a season-best 2:09.41.

McCoy won the 50-yard freestyle with a 24.58, and McEachrane won the 100 free with a time of 53.31. Taheri, meanwhile, took home the 200-yard freestyle title (1:56.68) and Underwood won the 200 back (2:09.66).

The relay team of Amanda Williams, McEachrane, Emerson and McCoy won the 200-yard medley relay with a season-best 1:49.69, and the quartet of McCoy, Underwood, Elizabeth Carey and McEachrane claimed the 400-yard free relay title with a 3:37.04.
