Sjoberg, Klochkova Take Two on Day Two of Moscow World Cup

By Phillip Whitten

MOSCOW, January 22. Sweden's Johanna Sjoberg and Ukraine's Yana Klochkova each won two events on the second day of competition of World Cup 6 in Moscow, the frozen Russian capital. But it was the Russians who dominated once again, winning six of the 17 events on offer.

As was the case yesterday, times were significantly slower than they were last week in Stockholm and Berlin.

Sjoberg, who won the 100 fly yesterday, today took the 50 fly in 26.55 and the 100 free in 53.90. Klochkova, winner of the 200 IM yesterday took the 100 meters today in 1:02.36 and the 400 in 4:39.34.

Russia's Nikolai Skvortsov turned in the best performance of the day, out-touching Andriy Serdinov in the 100 fly, 51.42 to 51.49 as Russians took the first four places. Yesterday Skvortsov won the 50 and 200 fly.

Ed Moses remained undefeated, turning in his third three-for-three performance in just over a week. Today he out-duelled Russia's Roman Sloudnov in the 100 breast, 59.33 to 59.50, to complete his sweep of the breaststroke events. Russians finished in the second, fourth, fifth, sixcth, seventh and eighth spots.

Four other Americans posted victories today. Kristy Kowal won the 50 breast in 31.10, then finished second in the 200 in 2:27.55, 12-hundredths behind Russia's Ekaterina Kormacheva.

Courtney Shealy won her second event here by hitting the pads first in the 100m back in 59.90, the only swimmer to crack a minute. Yesterday, the 2000 Olympian won the 50 free (25.07).

Stanford grad Randall Bal swam to gold in the 50 back in 24.06, giving him a dorsal sprint double.

Jason Lezak, who has been inconsistent in the 100, stroked to his third straight victory in the 50, easily out-distancing Poland's (and Cal's) Bart Kizierowski with his 21.50-second effort.

Russian distance ace Yuri Prilukov took the 1500 in a solid 14:47.42, six seconds ahead of Evgeny Bezroutchenko, best known for his open water exploits.

Fourteen year-old Chinese Liu Veiju won the men's 200 IM in 2:00.19.

Belarus' Alena Popchanka, who had three second-place finishes to her credit, finally struck gold in the 400 free, just beating Josefin Lillhage to the wall by 6-hundredths with her 4:07.13.

Russia's evgeny Aleshin swam a swift 200 back, clocking 1:53.70, as Russians finished 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8.
