Moses, Lezak and Bal Win Big at Stockholm World Cup

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, January 13. ED Moses, who has struggled ever since last summer, awoke from his funk today…and ROARED, scoring two impressive victories on the first day of the two-day FINA World Cup meet in Stockholm, the fourth stop on the 2003-2004 World Cup circuit.

Moses began the evening with an upset victory in the 50m breaststroke over world (long course) champion James Gibson (GBR), 27.10 to 27.16, with Chris Cook, another Brit, third in 27.33. Japan's Kosuke Kitajima, the long course WR-holder in the 100 and 200 meters, could manage only a fifth (27.37). With the notable exception of Moses, the winner, Britons dominated this event with Brits occupying five of the top seven spots.

As fast as Moses' 50 breast may have been, it was his 200m breast, later in the evening that brought the house down.

The world record-holder in this event, Moses performed like his namesake, virtually parting the waters to score a five-plus second victory in 2:04.54, a time only he has bettered. Gibson was second again in 2:09.73, while Adam Whitehead, still another Brit, placed third in 2:10.18.

Moses was one of three Americans to win here tonight. Jason Lezak won the 100m free in impressive fashion, touching in 47.24 in the meet’s first event. His time is the fastest thus far this season on the World Cup tour. South African Ryk Neethling was second in 47.45 while Sweden’s Stefan Nystrand was a distant third in 48.46.

Equally impressive was Randall Bal, who put a lot of water between himself and the rest of a strong field in the 100m back. At the wall, Bal’s 51.61 gave him a margin of almost a full second over Japan’s Tomomi Morita with Russia’s Evgueny Aleshin third in 52.62.

Women’s Events
Slovakia’s Martina Moravcova turned in the evening’s best performance among the women, as she won the 100 fly. Ahead of WR-pace by a quarter of a second at the 50 meter turn, the former SMU star “faded” to 56.90, the season’s fastest swim. Touching second was Australia’s Petria Thomas, whose 57.41 is ample evidence that her post-surgery recovery is going swimmingly.

Britain’s Melanie Marshall came from behind with 60 meters to go to win the 200 free in 1:55.62, just ahead of Sweden’s Josefin Lillhage (1:55.70) and Thomas (1:55.76).

With WR-holder Leisel Jones, long course world champion Luo Xuejuan and red-hot Amanda Beard absent, Sweden’s Emma Igelstrom, the former WR-holder, had little trouble in giving the home crowd something to cheer about. Igelstrom touched in 1:06.96, with Austria’s Mirna Jukic (1:07.09) and the USA’s Kristy Kowal (1:07.13) right behind.

Sweden scored another victory when WR-holder Therese Alshammar sprinted to victory in the 50m free in a swift 24.28. France’s Malia Metella (24.60) beat out Britain’s Alison Sheppard (24.62) for the silver.

Japan’s Reiko Nakamura edged Russia’s Stanislava Komarova by .17sec in the 200 back, touching in 2:06.65.

Chinese newcomer Gao Chang, 17, upset former world champion Jennifer Carroll to take the 50 back in the fastest time in the world this season, 27.61. Another Chinese swimmer, Zhou Yafei, breezed in the 200 IM with her 2:11.05, more than four seconds ahead of Jukic.

Britain’s Rebecca Cooke won the 800m free by a convincing margin of almost seven seconds, stopping the clock in 8:23.51.

Men’s Events
Canadian Brian Johns, the WR-holder in the 400 IM, took his pet event handily in 4:09.92, almost three seconds ahead of China’s Wang Wei.
Canada took another first when Mike Mintenko won a tight 50m fly race in 23.75, just ahead of Australia’s Adam Pine (23.79) and Russia’s Nikolai Skvortsov (23.84).

Russian distance ace Yuri Prilukov sprinted the final 100 meters of the 400 to touch in 3:41.10, about a second ahead of Romania’s Dragos Coman (4:42.12), who led most of the way, and South Africa’s Ryk Neethling (3:42.44), attempting an unusual sprint/distance double.

Takashi Matsuda swam an outstanding 1:53.67 to win the 200 fly, while his teammate, breaststroke WR-holder Kosuke Kitajima, came rushing from behind to upset Slovenia’s Peter Mankoc in the 100m IM, 53.71 to 53.79.
