By Jorge Aguado

MAR DEL PLATA, December 19. ON the first day of the Long Course Nationals being held at the 1995 Indoor Pan American swimming pool, Jose Martin Meolans swam two races under heavy work load and unshaved. He was at altitude training in Mexico for three weeks and then he swam in the Durban stage of the FINA World Cup. He plans to swim in Berlin and Rio de Janeiro in January.

He easily won the double century in freestyle with 1:49.75 and then went on to touch first in 50 meters butterfly with 24.84. This is the first meet under his new team named Club Atletico River Plata, one of the big powers in Argentina soccer.

Cecilia Biagioli from Cordoba under the tutelage of Meolans´s former coach, Daniel Garimaldi, set the only national record of the night in the 400 meters freestyle with 4:18.82 erasing Alicia Barrancos´4:19.83 set in 1994.

South American record holder (200 breast) Agustina De Giovanni pocketed two golds winning 50 meters breastroke (34.16) and 200 IM (2.27.25).

Another winners were young promise Gabriel Villagoyz in 800 freestyle (8:19.78), Olympian Eduardo Otero in 200 backstroke (2:04.58) and Walter Arciprete in 100 meters breastroke (1:03.73).
