Rick Say Sets National Record At Canadian Open

QUEBEC CITY, Canada, December 1. RICK Say of Calgary showed some vast improvement this weekend with his sprint speed and was rewarded with a national record in the men’s 200-meter freestyle Sunday, the final day of the Canadian Open and Short Course Nationals swimming competition.

Say clocked one minute 43.68 seconds to smash his previous record of 1:44.40 set at a World Cup event in Stockholm last year. Brian Johns of Vancouver was second in 1:46.09 and Mark Johnston of Vancouver third in 1:47.54.

"It’s been a very productive weekend," said Say, who also set personal best times in the 50 and 100 freestyles and fell just short in the 400 freestyle. "Tonight I wasn’t feeling spectacular but I decided to let it all hang out."

In the women’s 400 individual medley, Joanne Malar of Calgary earned her first national title since coming out of retirement this past spring, clocking 4:38.39 — less than four seconds off her Canadian record set in 1999. Liz Warden of Toronto was second in 4:39.60 and Michelle Landry of Vancouver third in 4:46.19.

"I’ve just come off the most intense training period I’ve ever been through and I was ready to race," said Malar. "Physically I wasn’t rested at all for this meet but mentally it was great to get back into the racing mode. I’m in the best shape of my life and now I need to compete against more national and international fields."

Other winners in men’s competition Sunday were Johns in the 400 individual medley, Johnston in the 800 freestyle, Morgan Knabe of Calgary in the 100 breaststroke and Mike Mintenko of Vancouver in the 100 butterfly.

Other women victors were Rhiannon Leier of Winnipeg in the 100 breaststroke, Jennifer Button of Toronto in the 100 butterfly, Sophie Simard of Quebec City in the 200 freestyle and Brittany Reimer of Surrey, B.C., in the 1,500 freestyle.

In the 4X50 medley relays, Vancouver’s UBC Dolphins and the Toronto All Stars set national records in the men’s and women’s final, respectively. It was a third relay mark for both clubs this weekend.

The competition marked the first assembly of the national team members since the world championships and Pan Am Games in the summer. Canadian national team head coach Dave Johnson was happy with what he saw. Nine national records were lowered including the men’s 200 IM Commonwealth mark by Johns on Friday night.

"Our swimmers responded to the challenge of getting into training early for the winter season and working hard," said Johnson. "The records are nice but it’s what we need to do if we want to make an impression on the international stage."
