Virginia’s Fran Crippen Named ACC Swimmer Of The Week, Again

GREENSBORO, N.C., November 25. UNIVERSITY of Virginia second-year swimmer Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week as announced Monday (November 24). Crippen won three individual events and also swam on a winning relay at the Texas A&M Fall Invitational held November 21-23 in College Station, Texas.

Crippen, a 2003 first-team All-American, wins the ACC's weekly award for the third time this season and for the sixth time in two seasons. Crippen posted a pair of NCAA automatic qualifying times and also bettered the NCAA provisional standard in two more events. He registered a winning time of 3:47.13 in the 400-meter freestyle to better the "A" standard in that event and also met the automatic standard in winning the 1500-meter freestyle with a time of 15:02.38. The 2002 ACC Swimmer of the Year won the 400-meter free by seven seconds and the 1500-meter free by more than 21 seconds. Crippen previously qualified for the 2004 NCAA Championships in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:05.15.

Crippen also won the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:50.82 and swam a leg on UVa's winning 800-meter freestyle relay that clocked a time of 7:22.15. The relay bettered the NCAA "B" standard with its time. He was also second in the 400-meter individual medley with a NCAA "B" time of 4:18.50 and placed third in the 200-meter individual medley (2:03.32).
