Rice Women Adds Two More Signees

HOUSTON, Texas, November 21. RICE University head swim coach Seth Huston announced that two more student-athletes from the high school ranks have signed with the school in the early period, doubling the current recruiting class to four. Huston's announcement comes on the eve of the team's participation in the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, Ill., this weekend.

Carey Hain of Kingwood and Sarah Taylor of Danville, Calif., are the latest to sign with the swim team for the 2004-05 season. Taylor is a high school all-American and team record holder in the 500-freestyle at San Ramon Valley H.S. in California. She is an experienced club swimmer for Livermore Aquatics under head coach Rich Thornton.

Hain also earned high school all-America honors. She specialized in the 200-free at nearby Kingwood HS under coach Lanny Lantroop and was selected to the 2003 all-state team in the event. She helped lead her club team, Blue Tide Aquatics and coach Steve Wilson, to the NSCA Junior National Championship. Both Hain and Taylor are outstanding students. They were named scholastic all-Americans by USA Swimming and selected as National Merit Scholars.

"Sarah will excel in middle distance and distance freestyle events and it's possible she will swim some butterfly," Huston said. "I look forward to seeing how she progresses through the rest of her high school career. Sarah has a lot of fast swimming ahead of her.

"We really liked what we saw of Carey as a junior and once we met her in person, we knew she was the right fit for Rice and our team," Huston added. "Carey is a versatile freestyler. She can swim just about any distance and is an awesome competitor."

Rice's two members of the signing class join a fall list that already includes Amy Halsey of Katy and Brittany Massengale of Alma, Ark. The Owls will next be in action at the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, Ill., on Nov. 21-23.
