IUPUI Splits With St. Louis, Is Swept by Ball State -- November 15, 2003

INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 15. THE IUPUI swimming and diving teams took on Ball State and St. Louis in a double dual meet Friday evening. The men's team split the two meets, defeating St. Louis 67-46 and losing to Ball State 72-41. The women lost both meets, falling to St. Louis 89-24 and Ball State 102-11.

The Jaguars had several outstanding swims on the men's side. Freshman Brian Wheeler (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point/University College) smashed his own school record in the 1000 freestyle by 11.75 seconds. He became the first swimmer in IUPUI history to break the 10-minute barrier in the 1000 free with a time of 9:54.50. Wheeler also finished second in the 500 free in a team season-best time of 4:51.13.

A.J. Parks (Bremen, Ind./Bremen/School of Technology) continued his stellar senior season with a win in 50 free in a time of 21.58. He also set a team season-best time of 21.37 while swimming the leadoff leg of the 200 free relay.

Bryce Cox (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble/University College) won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 293.20 points, the third-highest score in school history in the event. Rob Trame (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee/University College) had a pair of team season-best times of 2:04.85 in the 200 IM and 2:15.30 in the 200 breaststroke.

Both relay teams also enjoyed success. The quartet of Parks, Grant Anderson (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike/School of Physical Education & Tourism Management), Damien Vittorio (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central/University College) and Brett Ellsworth (Jasper, Ind./Jasper/University College) were victorious in the 200 free relay in 1:28.47. Parks, Anderson, Trame and Chris Hutchison (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central/School of Engineering) set a team season-best time of 1:38.05 in their second-place finish.

The women struggled all night, but managed to set two team season-best results. Clare Helphinstine's (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield/School of Medicine) 200 breaststoke time of 2:31.82 was her best clocking in the event in over 1-1/2 years. Jennifer Ridenour (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo/School of Nursing) had the team's best score in the 3-meter diving event with a mark of 186.70 points.

The swimming and diving teams return to the pool next weekend when they take part in the Wabash Invitational. The meets starts at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 22.
