Tulane's Jackie Corcoran Wins Rice’s First-Ever Biathlon -- October 18, 2003
HOUSTON, Texas, October 18. THE Tulane Green Wave’s freshmen outperformed their rookie counterparts on the Rice squad, but the experience of the Owls proved to be the difference as the Tulane University swim team fell to the host institution 51-85 in the first-ever Biathlon at The Reef.
Tulane senior Jackie Corcoran won in 49:41 for the individual title. Just 41 seconds behind was Tulane freshman Nicole Taheri with a time of 50:22, good for second place.
Tulane had eight freshmen score while Rice placed two seniors, four juniors and a sophomore in the Top 16 to claim the team title.
The unique event featured three competitive legs on the order of a triathlon, and was scored like a collegiate cross country meet. The race consisted of a one-mile open-water swim, followed by a two-mile run, and concluded with another one-mile swim in open water.
“We performed well, but Rice just flat outraced us today,” head coach Daniella Irle said. “The encouraging thing today is that our freshmen far exceeded their freshmen, and that’s a good measuring stick that we wanted to use. Rice had a lot of girls in the top eight and that’s what it takes to win a competition like this.
“We’re disappointed in the loss, but we’re pleased with the fact that we had some freshmen able to go head-to-head with some very good upperclassmen. It’s a loss, and we are disappointed as we are going to go into every meet expecting to win. We’re not going to use our lack of collegiate experience as an excuse. Our objective now is to focus on the meet two weeks from now and simply get better.”
Jessica Hughes followed Taheri for Tulane with a time of 51:45 to finish eighth, followed by fellow rookies Maureen Quinn (9th, 51:57), Nellie Langeland (11th, 52:14), Katherine McCoy (12th, 52:27), Leslie Christian (13th, 53:19), Monica Jones (14th, 53:19) and Amanda Williams (16th, 53:50).
Also competing for the Green Wave were freshmen Elizabeth Carey (19th, 54:23), Jen Berzinis (20th, 54:40), Linda McEachrane (24th, 57:10), Megan Underwood (25th, 57:32) and Taylor Emerson (26th, 58:01), along with junior Katie McGuire (29th, 62:59).
The Green Wave returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 1 when they travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on Florida A&M, Florida Southern and North Florida. Tulane’s first home meet of the season is slated for Sunday, Nov. 23, when the Green Wave host Louisiana-Monroe and Nevada at 1 p.m. at The Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium.
