ASU Alumni Meet Features Former Standouts

TEMPE, Ariz, October 12. THE annual Arizona State swimming alumni meet was held this morning at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center, with over 20 alumni taking part in races with the present varsity squad.

One of the highlights of the day was ASU senior All-American Nick Brunelli clocking a 20.58 in the 50 freestyle, one of the top times in the nation for the young season. Just behind him was senior standout from last year Bobby Zaabadick with a 20.84. Zaabadick is set to represent the United States in the 50m free at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Korea this November.

In the women's 50 free, school record holder, and senior last year, Claire Hedenskog was the only woman under 24 seconds with her 23.71.

Other early season times of note were Ágnes Kovács in the 50 breaststroke (29.17), Florence Mauro in the 50 butterfly (26.40) and newcomer Jamie Howard being the only women's participant in the 100 IM to come in at under a minute (59.71).

Several former Sun Devil standouts could be spotted at the meet, with many showing they can still record fast times in the pool. Past ASU stars competing included Attila Czene (world record holder, 200m IM; 1996 Olympic gold medallist 200m IM), Francisco Sanchez (1996 NCAA Champion, 50 free, '96/'00 Olympian), Pablo Abal ('00 Olympian), Robert Delgado ('96/'00 Olympian), Felipe Delgado ('96/'00 Olympian), Ron Johnson (legendary ASU coach; multiple masters world record holder), Carolyn Adel ('96/'00 Olympian; 2000 NCAA Woman of the Year for Arizona) and Camilla Johansson ('00 Olympian).

The Sun Devils begin their regular season next week when they travel to Hawaii for a Friday, October 17 dual meet set for a 5 p.m. start locally. The ASU diving squad will get their season underway at the same meet.
