Jim Lutz Steps Down as Michigan State Head Coach -- October 8, 2003
EAST LANSING, Michigan, October 7. IN a surprise move, Michigan State's head men's and women's swimming and diving coach Jim Lutz has stepped down from his position, effective immediately. Reportedly, he has been suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome.
Lutz sent an e-mail to coaching colleagues in which he stated: "I have always felt the I must stay true to my convictions and that my family is the top priority in my life. Growing up without a father I made a vow that if I were ever blessed to be a father my children would never feel the pain of not having a parent. As of now I do not have any set plans other than getting rest."
Matt Gianiodis, the Spartans' assistant head coach, will serve as interim head coach for the 2003-04 season.
MSU begins its season with the traditional intrasquad Green & White meet on Oct. 17. The Spartans' first Big 10 Conference dual meet is on October 24 against the University of Iowa.
