SMU Names Andy Kershaw Men’s Swimming Assistant Coach

DALLAS, Tex, October 7. ANDY Kershaw, an assistant swimming coach for Ohio University for the past four years, has been named assistant men's swimming coach at SMU. Head Coach Eddie Sinnott made the announcement Friday. Kershaw replaces Jim Henry who left SMU in April to take the head men's swimming coach position at the University of Denver.

"I am very excited to be joining a swimming and diving program with so much talent, history, and tradition, not to mention one of the finest academic institutions in the country," Kershaw said. "I look forward to doing my part to help the team continue to have the success that it has had over the years."

Kershaw was a member of the Bobcat swimming program since his arrival at Ohio University in 1994. After four years as a student assistant with Ohio, Kershaw spent the 1998-99 season as a graduate assistant for the program before being hired as assistant coach in 1999. Kershaw was primarily responsible for distance groups and oversaw the organization of recruiting efforts at Ohio. During his four years as assistant coach at Ohio, Kershaw helped lead the women's team to back-to-back Mid-American Team Championships, while guiding two Ohio swimmers to NCAA All-American performances. Kershaw's coaching success at the national level included 11 NCAA qualifiers in 25 events and four U.S.A. Olympic Trial Qualifiers over the past four years.

Kershaw's coaching prowess has also spilled over into the classroom, where he assisted in guiding two Bobcat swimmers to GTE-CoSida Academic All-America honorees, six Academic All-Americans honorable mention, and 28 NCAA Academic All-American team awards.

A native of Mansfield, Ohio, Kershaw earned a bachelors degree in psychology and a masters degree in athletic administration from Ohio University. Kershaw and his wife Elizabeth reside in Dallas.
