Auburn’s Garcia Named USA Diving Sportsman of the Year

SAN DIEGO, Calif, September 13. AUBURN senior diver Caesar Garcia added to his ever-growing list of accomplishments on Friday as the Baton Rouge, La., native was named USA Diving's Sportsman of the Year at the XXIV United States Aquatic Sports Convention's Board of Governor's meeting on Friday night in San Diego.

Garcia had one of the finest years ever put together by an Auburn diver this past year as he won the 2003 NCAA champion on the platform, placed fifth on the 3-meter and ninth on the 1-meter at the national championships in Austin, Texas.

Garcia was just as impressive on the international circuit as he was on his native soil, winning the synchronized 3-meter and platform events at the Speedo National Diving Championships with AU teammate Matt Bricker; placing second on the platform at the Speedo American Cup; placing second in the synchronized platform at the Italian Grand Prix with Bricker; and placing second in the 3-meter synchronized with Bricker at the World Championship Team Trials, amongst others.

Garcia also had great success in the classroom this past year, being named a Verizon Academic All-American for the second consecutive year.

"This is a great honor for Caesar," AU Diving Coach Jeff Shaffer said. "To receive this award from the governing body of USA Diving says something special about Caesar."
