By Stephen J. Thomas

SYDNEY, August 27. AUSTRALIAN Masters ace Jenny Whiteley chalked up her sixth world record of the year when she became the first women in the 45-49 age group to swim under 1:10 for the 100m individual medley at the Warringah Masters short course meet on August 16.

Whiteley clocked 1:09.68 to slash over a second off the old mark set in September 2001 by Brit Maggie Kelly (1:10.87). In June, Whiteley had clocked 1:10.92 to just miss the global standard but this time round she had targeted this event.

David King, her training partner from the Sydney club Ryde just managed to keep his head in front in the same heat to clock a new Aussie record of 1:09.52 for men 50-54, breaking the old mark by 0.82 seconds.

Whiteley also just missed her own national record in the 50m free by 0.13 seconds when she swam a swift 28.37. American Jackie Hirsty holds the global standard at 28.06.
