NCSA Junior Long Course Championships Underway in Houston

THE WOODLANDS, Tex, August 12. THE 4th National Club Swimming Association Junior Long Course Championships is underway, beginning this evening with the 800 Free and 800 Free Relays.

Arizona Desert Fox's Joni Zimmerman, 15, took the women's 800 from the second heat, negative splitting her way to an 8:59.33 (Zimmerman's splits: 4:29.76 – 4:29.57). Colleen Gordon, 16, finished 11-hundreths behind with an 8:59.44. Zimmerman's AFOX teammate, Jaclyn Puschak, 14, rounded out the top 3 with a 9:00.57.

In the men's 800 free, Terrapins' Matt Biel, 16, took the lead at the 400 meter mark and never looked back, finishing in a senior national qualifying time of 8:19.77. Industry Hills’ Andrew Deters, 15, finished two and a half seconds back in 8:22.35, also a senior national standard. Tobias Work, 17, of Cape Cod Swim Club finished third in 8:23.56.

The women’s 800 free relay was won by the hosting Woodlands Swim Team. Anchored by 12 year-old Kelsey Amundsen, The Woodlands finished in 8:34.82, Pacific Swim was second in 8:35.34, Industry Hills finished in third with an 8:38.60.

Reigning men’s Junior Long Course team champions Fort Lauderdale Swim Team took the first relay of the men’s meet in 7:51.67. The Terrapins Swim Team finished second in 7:53.67, The Woodlands Swim Team was the only other team under eight minutes, finishing in 7:59.23
