Crippen, Kelly, DeFreese, Weaner Stroke to Victory as L.I. Open Winds Up -- July 13, 2003

NASSAU, New York, July 13. FRAN Crippen and Kim Kelly each notched gold medal #5 today, as Michelle deFreese and Tricia Weaner aslo swam impresively on the final day of the 2003 Long Island Open.

Crippen set a meet record in winning the men's 1500 meters in a meet record 15:29.52. In all, Crippen took the 200, 400, 800 and 1500 free, and the 400 IM. Each time, NLIAC's Brendan Neligan was runner-up, this time in 15:52.72.

Kelly, 16 years old and representing the Badger Swim Club, completed her sweep of the women's freestyle events, setting a meet mark of 16:41.50 to take the women's metric mile. Kelly wound up with wins in the 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle events.

This time she led a first-through-fourth Badger sweep that saw her 15 year-old taemmate, Paolo Duguet place second in 17:01.30.

Rutgers grad, Michelle deFreese flew to an easy win in the 100 fly in 1:01.63.

Fourteen year-old Tricia Weaner won the 100 back in a very impressive 1:03.21

In other women's events, Courtney Stanchock took the 100 breast in 1:11.82, a second ahead of Corrie Clark. Clark turned around and won the very next event, the 200 IM in 2:20.07.


On the men's side, Haithan Hasasan, Oakland Live Y'ers, took a close race in the 100 fly, in 55.37, 9-hundredths ahead of Matt Haupt. Masters swimmer Jason eaddy, 27, was fourth in 56.69.

Haupt won the 200 IM in 2:08.43; Mark Zucca took the 100 breast in 1:07.39; while Eric Bugby was the winner of the 100 back in 58.98.
