Sandeno Takes Two On Second Day Of Janet Evans Invitational

LOS ANGELES, July 11. USC’s Kaitlin Sandeno, a 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, won both the 200m fly and the 400m free to highlight the second day of the Janet Evans Invitational at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium today. Sandeno first took the 200m fly in 2:09.72 and came back a little more than an hour later to win the 400m free in 4:12.71. She won the fly by nearly three seconds and won the free by half of a second.

"That 200 fly – I'm in shock," Sandeno said. "It's my best time since two summers ago. I'm having fun here. I'm joking around with my teammates. It's important to get my mental frame of mind back in the right place. In the 400, I was just going to have some fun because I was so happy with the 200 fly. That's also very encouraging. I'm very excited going into nationals next month."

Sandeno led a Trojan sweep in the 200m fly with teammate Jana Krohn (2:12.58) and junior-to-be teammate Margie Pedder (2:13.48) following Sandeno into the wall, second and third, respectively. Krohn held a slight lead (.18) after the first 100, but Sandeno took over the lead after 150 and powered through the final 50 in 33.15.

In the 400m free, Kalyn Keller (UNAT) led briefly after 100 meters, but swam the remaining 300 meters about a half body-length behind, never able to catch up. She finished in 4:13.21. Alyssa Kiel (Lake Erie) was third.

Andrew Schnell (Stanford) won the men's 100m free in 51.34, taking the final from lane eight. He was second after 50 meters, taking over the lead from Adam Mania, who led at the turn but faded to finish eighth. Gabe Woodward (Nova) took second (51.51) while Ben Jones (Auburn) was third 51.62.

Mauren Farrell (Canyons) became the second swimmer of the evening to win from lane eight. In the most tightly contested race of the finals, four swimmers touched within three tenths of a second of each other, Farrell edging them all in 2:15.73. Lauren Rogers (Terrapin) hit the wall just after in 2:15.82 while Beth Botsford finished another heartbeat later in 2:15.92. Jessica Hayes was fourth in 2:16.00.

Southern California’s Trent Staley won the 200m back in 2:02.42, leading for more than a second for most of the race. Chris De Jong (Club Wolverine) was second (2:03.51) while Stanford's Peter Marshall was third (2:04.02).

Ross Burmester (Harlequin) won the men's 200m fly, going wire-to-wire in 1:59.90. Jayme Cramer (Stanford) was second in 2:00.62 while Mike Gausman (USC) was third in 2:01.73.

Colleen Lanne (NOVA) won the women's 100m free, touching first in 56.01, just ahead of Karalynn Joyce (Club Wolverine), who finished second in 56.18. Dana Vollmer (Fast-NT), was a half-tick behind in third (56.63).

Justin Mortimer (Mission Viejo) won the 400m free in 3:54.12. He trailed for the first half of the race, but overtook Cramer after 300 meters and held on to win. Cramer earned his second second-place finish (3:55.29) while Jones took his second third (3:55.63).
