UCSD Swimmer Featured in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd

SAN DIEGO, Calif, June 2. UC San Diego women's swimming sophomore and team MVP, Rosanna Delurgio, is featured in the latest issue of Sports Illustrated.

She is recognized in the magazine's "Faces in the Crowd" section for her outstanding performance at the 2003 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships in Grand Forks, North Dakota this March.

Delurgio, the team's top breaststroker, established new Division II national records at the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships in Long Beach in February, and then improved her marks in both events at the NCAA Division II Nationals on her way to national titles in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Her times in those events, 1:01.88 and 2:15.84, are the fastest in UCSD history, and among the top times in the United States this year. She was also a member of four top-four, school record relays at Nationals, raising her All-American honors total to six for the year. She has received eight All-American honors in her first two years of collegiate swimming.

Delurgio's efforts helped the Triton team to a tie for third at Nationals, improving on last year's fourth-place finish. With only two graduating seniors on the roster, Delurgio and her teammates will look to build on the outstanding achievements of this year with a seasoned and accomplished returning squad. After next season, Delurgio will prepare for the Olympic Trials, to be held in July, 2004, in Long Beach, California.
