San Diego Swim Masters Set New USMS National Relay Records

LA JOLLA, Calif., May 14. SAN Diego Swim Masters (SDSM) relay teams established three new USMS national records at the La Jolla Spring Classic short course yard meet hosted by Swim Smarter La Jolla Masters on April 27th. The meet was held at the brand new 50-meter by 25-yard Coggan Family Aquatic Complex.

Competing in the 35+ category, the relay quartet of Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen (41), Caroline Krattli (41), Janet Coover (37) and Beth Knight (43) became the first swimmers to set a USMS national record in the new pool. Competing in the 400-yard medley, the ladies swam a blistering 4:07.99 slicing over five seconds off the previous best of 4:15.70 set by 1776 in 2000.

Twenty minutes later, Krattli and Pipes-Neilsen joined forces with USMS record holder Adam Conway, 24, and newcomer John La Raia, 23, to establish a new national record in the 19+ mixed 400-yard medley. This speedy foursome teamed two "mature" women with two "young" men to create one very fast relay. SDSM hit the pads with a time of 3:47.31 taking four seconds off the mark of 3:51.34 established by METRO in 2001.

Rounding out the meet, SDSM women’s 35+ team with Coover, Knight, Krattli and Pipes-Neilsen hacked over 16 seconds off the national record in the 800-yard free with an amazing 8:00.23. The old record was a 8:16.72 set by Rocky Mountain Masters in 2002.
