Chen Takes the 400m Free in 4:08.99 as Chinese Nationals Open

TIANJIN, China, April 15. VETERANS dominated the first day of competition at the Chinese National Swimming Championships and World Championship Trials, being held in the northern industrial city of Tianjin.

Unlike in previous years, the winning times were solid but by no means eye-opening.

Chen Hua took the women's 400m freestyle in 4:08.99 with Yang Yu almost two seconds behind.

Yu Cheng won the men's 400 in a much more pedestrian 3:53.99, taking the measure of Ji Zhixiang by more than a second.

The Shanghai provincial team took both the women's and men's 400m freestyle relays, each time beating Guandong province for the top spot. The women's race went to Shanghai in 3:45.78, the men's in 3:26.45.
