Two Masters World Records, 13 National Marks Set at Aussi State Champs

By Stephen J. Thomas

SYDNEY, March 17. THIRTEEN individual national records, including two new world marks, were set last weekend at the New South Wales Masters Long Course Championships at the Blacktown pool in Sydney's north-west.

Eighty-year-old Kevin Vickery from the Seaside Pirates club clocked 6:39.26 in the 400m free to take more than a second off Japan's Hikoji Ueki's world best for the 80-84 age group set way back in 1995 when the Japanese also set records for the 200 and 100 free. Vickery had a good weekend breaking the national records in the 200 free (3:08.19), 200 IM (4:09.50) and 200 back (3:52.27).

The other world record fell in the 45-49 age group to Jenny Whiteley in the 200 breaststroke, breaking American Colette Crabbe's mark when she stroked a hot 2:55.96 to Crabbe's 2:57.24 set in August '01. The 45-year-old Whiteley, from the Ryde club, also lowered the national records for the 100 and 200 backstroke, clocking 1:16.68 and 2:55.54 respectively.

The other individual national records to fall included an individual medley double to 31-year-old Catherine Chatterton in the 30-34 age group. Chatterton clocked 5:30.83 for the 400 IM to take just over one second off the old mark and 2:35.29 in the 200 IM to lower the record by exactly 0.5s.

Local girl, Mary Garton collected a breaststroke double in the 85-89 age group. Garton slashed almost 42 seconds off the old 200m time to clock 8:53.05 and then went 4:14.01 in the two lap event.

David King stroked 2:16.36 for the 200 free in the 50-54 age group and the grand old man of Aussi Masters, Alfredo Cherchi slashed his own national record for the 100 backstroke by a massive 12 seconds to record 3:32.44 in the 95-99 age group. Cherchi, 96, spent the first sixty-odd years of his life in Italy before migrating Down Under!

The Ryde club women's team (Jones/Whiteley/Chatterton/
Matthews) for the 160+ age also set a new national time for the 200 medley relay, clocking 2:22.12.
