Phelps Breaks American Record in the 200 yard Fly -- March 11, 2003 Michael Phelps - 2003 Eastern Classic

BALTIMOR, March 11. MICHAEL Phelps broke the 200y butterfly American record on Monday with a 1:41.72, erasing the mark of 1:41.78 set by Mel Stewart in 1991.

The seventeen-year-old North Baltimore Aquatic Club standout broke the record during the Maryland Swimming All Star Zone Qualifier held at the US Naval Academy March 7-10.

His splits for the race, which was also a 17-18 NAG, were: 23.10, 49.31 (26.21), 1:15.77 (26.46), 1:41.72 (25.95).

Phelps also posted impressive unshaved times in the 200 freestyle (1:33.91), 200 IM (1:44.37) and the 200 breaststroke (1:59.50).

The All Star Qualifier was Phelps' final tune-up for the Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool (April 6th) and the ConocoPhilips Spring Nationals (April 1-5) in Indianapolis.
