Michigan Edges Minnesota to Take the Men’s Big 10 Crown

ANN ARBOR, Mich., March 1. JON Urbancek turned "21" this season and for his coming-out present he gave himself the 2003 men's Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championship.

After a two-year hiatus, Michigan — with Urbancek, now in his 21st year at the Wolverine helm after having been an All-America swimmer under his legendary predecessor, Gus Stager, in the 1960s — won its record 32nd Big Ten title here this evening at their home Canham Natatorium. (Indinana with 23 ranks second.)

For the vicory, Urbancek was named Big Ten Coach of the Year, his eighth such honor.

Michigan has hosted the Big Tens at Canham four times since 1996 and has won on three of those occasions, 1996, '00 and '03. The only loss was in '96 when Minnestoa won, but the Wolverines had just graduated such stars as Gustavo Borges (only swimemr ever to win NCAA 100 free all four years) and Tom Dolan, although in the latter's, case he turned pro after his freshman year.

Led by a pair of Big Ten individual champions — fifth-year senior Jeff Hopwood of Palo Alto, CA. (who spurned Stanford to come here) and junior Jason Coben (Newtown Square, PA.) — Urbancek's Wolverines claimed the Big Ten crown tonight in front of a jam-packed home crowd at Canham Natatorium on The Big Blue campus.

Michigan scored 727 points, 38 points ahead of two-time defending Big Ten champion Minnesota (689. It was Michigan's first title since 2000 when the meet was last here.

Starting the final session with just an 11.5-point lead, the Wolverines scored 80 points in the night's first final, the 1650 yard freestyle, and catapulted themselves to a 50.5-point advantage. Five U-M swimmers placed in the top six spots. Pacing the way for U-M was freshman Peter Vanderkaay, 500 free champ opening-night with his nation-leading 4:16.20, who stroked to a second-place finish and pr/NCAA automatic qualifying time of 14:49.63. — third-fastest nationally.

Vanderkaay was voted Freshman of the Meet for his performance.

Another Wolverine rookie, Tyler DeBerry, a native of Tucson who came east to train under Urbancek in hopes of becoming a top-notch distance freestyler; sophomore Brendan Neligan, a native New Yorker now in his second year here; senior Justin Drake, another Arizonan from Phoenix and sophomore Andrew Hurd, a native of Canada and member of the Maple Leaf nation's nationl team finished second through sixth, respectively. Hometown sophomore Zayd Ma, was 12th, with all five earning NCAA consideration times.

While Urbancek and the Wolverines deserve all the credit for snapping Minnesota's two-year winning streak, several Gophers — particularly sophomore sprinter Terry Silkaitis and junior distance star Justin Mortimer — turned in superb individual efforts.

Another swimmer who had a great Big Tens was unheraled Purdue Boilermaker sophomore Louis Paul. A native Australian and member of famed Aussie Coach Forbes Carlile's New South Wales "Millennium All-Stars" team, Paul was voted Swimmer of the Meet for his pair of wins in the 200 IM and 200 backstroke — both prs and Purdue records too.

Silkaitis is an Evanston, IL. product who swept to the sprint triple crown, winning the 50 (19.95 with a pr 19.88 in qualifying), 100 (Big 10 meet-record 42.87) and 200 frees (1:34.42) — first time in the new century for that particular feat (shades of Rowdy Gaines).

Mortimer, runner-up in the 500 free, won the mile in 14:48.77, an NCAA "A" cut and No. 2 nationally to USC's Erik Vendt's 14:42.97 from the Longhorn Invitational at Austin last December, Mortimer's pr and Gopher record is 14:47.82 from the NCAAs his freshman season at College Station, where he earned the bronze.

(Vendt is defending NCAA 400 IM-1650 champ.)

Michigan built on its team lead when a trio of Wolverines placed in the top eight in the 200 backstroke. Purdue's Paul won in a "B" cut 1:44.56 but — and it turned out to be a big "but" — Big Blue freshman Chris DeJong made up two spots in the final 50 yards to place second with a pr and consideration-time of 1:44.76. Sophomore Chuck Sayao, 400 IM champ in a pr and "A" cut 3:46.30, and senior Ryan Earhart placed seventh and eighth, respectively, with "B" times of 1:47.00 and 1:47.01.

Minnesota was able to narrow the scoring gap with Silkaitis' first-place finish in the 100 freestyle, but the Wolverines kept pace with a strong performance of their own. Swimming an inspired race, senior Garrett Mangieri improved five spots from his preliminary seeding of seventh and finished runner-up with a consideration 43.84.

Swimming in his final race in front of the home crowd in Canham, Hopwood continued the Michigan momentum. He claimed his fourth career Big Ten-title (and first in three years) by taking No. 1 in the 200 breaststroke with a pool-record and NCAA "A" 1:56.31– a career-best and No. 3 all-time on the Wolverine list. Senior Josh Hack won the "B" final to give Michigan additional needed points.

The Wolverines again surged ahead in the team scoring, collecting four of the top 16 finishes in the 200 yard butterfly. Freshman Davis Tarwater wound up second to Northwestern's Kellam O'Connaor in a pr and "B" cut 1:45.46. The winner clocked 1:44.99.

Michigan junior Dan Ketchum, runner-up at NCAAs last year in the 200 free and Michigan's male Athlete of the Year for 2001-'02, hit the wall in the fourth spot with his 1:46.21, also an NCAA consideration time. Ketchum was also Big Ten rookie of the year two yezrs ago while Hopwood won in '99 and Nelligan earned the award last season.

Named co-Diver of the Championships, Coben added 20 points to the Michigan score by winning the 10-meter platform to seal the victory for the Wolverines.

Standing 30-feet above the Dick Kimball Diving Pool with one-dive left in the event, Coben sprang from the platform and solidified his second-consecutive Big Ten title in the event. His 11-dive rotation totaled an NCAA zone diving qualifying score of 549.85.

Michigan capped its title-winning performance in the meet's final event, the 400 free relay, finishing a solid third. The quartet of Mangieri, DeJong, Tarwater and Ketchum clocked an NCAA "B" 2:56.10.

All Urbancek's got to do now is sweep the conference title for the rest of this decade, then win again in 2010 and he'll pass Stager's 19 championships with 20.

Nothing to it but to do it, right, coach?
