FLASH: Holy Moses!! Ed Moses Slashes American Record in the 200 yard Breaststroke -- March 2, 2003 Ed Moses - October 2002

By Phillip Whitten

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., March 1. ED Moses, the world record-holder in the short course 100 and 200 meters breaststroke, slashed the American record for the 200 yard event today, swimming in a time trial by himself at the ACC Championships in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Moses lowered the record by exactly one second. The old mark, 1:52.88, was set last March at the NCAA Championships by the University of Texas' Brendan Hansen.

Moses, a senior at the University of Virginia, is ineligible for collegiate competition, as he is a professional.

Swimming unshaved, and with one day of rest (for travel to North Carolina), Moses split:

Cumulative: 25.2 - 53.1 - 1:22.1 - 1:51.88

By 50s: 25.2 - 27.9 - 29.0 - 29.8

He also swam a 52.60 for the 100 yard breaststroke on Friday. Splits: 24.8 - 27.8.

Afterwards, Moses told SwimInfo: "Hopefully that means good things in the future for me."
