NCAA Div. I Women: Indiana Takes Narrow Lead Over Wisconsin After Day Three of Big-10s

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., February 21. WAS that Mark Spitz and Gary Hall in the pool and Doc Counsilman, stopwatch in hand, pacing nervously on deck?

No, that might have been the scene some 30-plus years ago but tonight, in the third evening of competition at the 2003 Big 10 women's swimming and diving championships here at Purdue's Doris Z. Holloway Pool, it was merely Indiana women's Dorsey urging her Hoosiers on to victory for the old IU red and white..

Tierney's exhortations must have paid off as Indiana expanded a two-point advantage over Wisconsin on Thursday evening to a 17-point bulge tonight, hitting the hay with a 400-383 point lead. Third is defending champ Penn State (340) while fourth is Michigan I315) and host Purdue fifth (368).

The Hoosier lead might have been considerably wider had not their 400 medley relay squad been disqualified in the finals, costing them a potential 40 points.

As it was, Penn State won the race in a Big 10-record 3:36.29, breaking Michigan's record of 3:36.78 from two years ago. Nittany Lion Sarah Haupt, a precocious froshwoman, gave her team the impetus it needed for its record-breaking performance with a pr 53.60 leadoff leg, also a PSU record.

Tierney, the 2001 and 2002 Big Ten Coach of the Year, knew that her team needed to be in contention going into the final two days of competition but didn't necessarily expect to be leading. Yet, the entire dynamic of the meet changed following the disqualification of the 400 medley relay team. Adding to those tensions, Indiana's Kristen Bradley was also disqualified in the consolation finals of the 400 individual medley.

What made the disqualifications so much more profound — and even hard to swallow — was the fact that it was a DQ in the 400 freestyle relay a year ago that cost IU its first Big Ten title since 1981, sent Penn State home champions, and left the Hoosiers heartbroken.

"We thought we could be ahead at the end of today," said Tierney. "We actually thought it could be a little bit more than it is. That's how a four-day meet goes. The meet starts over again tomorrow. That's how we always look at it."

Indiana had two individual winners on the evening as senior Sara Hildebrand set a Big 10 record on the 3-meter board, an event she had never won before at the conference championship. And junior Brooke Taflinger won the 400 yard IM in a Big 10 record 4:12.43. Hildebr recorded a score of 594.65 to outdistance second-place finisher Nanilea Underwood of Iowa by 30.05 points.

"We're thrilled to be in the lead but we were in this same position last year and we ended up finishing second so I'm not making any predictions," Tierney added. "Our kids swam well this evening and things are looking good but there's a lot of racing left."

After the medley relay debacle, the Hoosiers came back strong in the next event, the 400 IM, taking first and third. Winner was junior Taflinger, a native of nearby Kokomo, who dropped her pr by a cool half-dozen seconds — clocking that Big 10-record 4:12.43. The old standard was a 4:14.00 by Michigan's Ann Kampfe from the 1997 Championships.

Second (and also under the old standard) was Wisconsin's Beth Pendleton (4:13.13) and third was Hoosier Kristy Martin (4:16.42). NCAA automatic cut is 4:15.12.

Next up was the 100 fly, where Penn State rookie Amber Biedermann laid waste to yet another Big 10-record with her winning 53.54. She was even faster in the morning: 53.47. The old conference record was a 54.24 by Minnesota's Tanya Schuh.

Pushing Biederman to her record was Michigan's Ann Weilbacher, who clocked a pr and Michigan record 53.61 for the silver — first Wolverine ever under 54.0. Northwestern's Carmen Cosgrove, a former Big 10 Swimmer of the Week this season, was third (54.63). The NCAA "A" standard, which the top two met, is 54.14.

Now it was Wisconsin's turn to heat up the Boilermaker pool's waters, and Coach Eric Hansen's troops — in the person of sophomore Carly Piper and senior teammate Sara McCauley, didn't diappoint.

The Badger duo finished one-two with Piper taking top honors in a Big 10 championship-record (and pr) 1:46.05. Her previous career-best was a 1:46.69 from the Longhorn Invitational at Texas last December. McCauley was hot on her heels with her pr 1:46.10.

The Badger and Big 10-record is 1:45.88 by Ellen Stonebraker from NCAAs at East Meadow two years ago.

The win was Piper's third gold of the meet as she had previously come home No. 1 in the 500 free (Big 10 meet record) and swam a leg on Wisconsin's victorious 800 free relay too.

She was voted Big 10 Swimmer of the Year as a freshman last season for wins in the 200-500-1650 frees and 800 FR, a feat which she'll likely replicate by winning the mile tomorrow.

The home team's fans had plenty to cheer about in the next race, the 100 breast, as senior Lindsay Lange — a bridesmaid the past two seasons — finally made it all the way to the altar tonight as she won her initial Big 10 championship.

Lange went a pr and Boilermaker-record 1:00.47 for the win, with Penn State freshman Courtney Stanschock a close runner-up (pr 1:00.83). Third was Wolverine Kelli Stein (1:02.11). In the prelims Lange was even quicker (1:00.42). The "A" cut is 1:01.07.

The Purdue senior was given a warm and rousing ovation on the victory podium. The relief in having won her first Big 10 title in the very last meet of her career here was apparent, as was her joy.

In the 100 back, Nittany Lion Haupt — who smoked 'em on the opening leg of the medley relay — laid waste to the field again with her second pr of the meet, a 53.44. Badger McCauley, doing double-duty (200 free-100 back), was second (54.58) and Jen Skolaski of Iowa grabbed the bronze.

The Championships conclude Saturday with seven events. Prelims start at 10 a.m., while finals begin at 6 p.m.
