East Carolina, UNC-Wilmington Split: DQ Costs ECU a Sweep

EAST CAROLINA UNIV., Feb. 3. A breech of the rules cost East Carolina's men's swimming team a victory
Saturday as the Pirates concluded their dual meet season yesterday.

East Carolina's women had already recorded a 151.5 -83.5 win over UNC Wilmington and the men had apparently downed the Seahawks by winning the final relay.

"An unfortunate thing happened," said Pirate coach Rick Kobe. "We had won the meet and then one of our swimmers jumped in while there were still people swimming that event and that is an automatic disqualification for that relay team."

Nobody can argue against the clock however where the ECU men finished in 3:07.48 to UNCW's relay of 3:07.61

That forced ECU to forfeit the points it would have earned and UNC Wilmington went away with a 124-117 victory.

"This is very, very disappointing," Kobe added. "The guys fought really hard. It's a tough way to lose the meet when you've won it, but those are the rules."

The ECU men won six events. Junior Matt Walker took first in the 200 freestyle (1:41.37) and the 100 free (46.59). Sophomore Casey Cronin took first in the 200 individual medley (1:54.27) and the 200 breaststroke (2:09.78).

Junior Matt Wildrick won the 200 backstroke (1:55.71) and Robbie Deer won the 3-meter board (272.78).

The Pirate women won 12 of the 13 events. Sophomore Diane Parker took first in the 200 free (1:53.07) and the 200 butterfly (2:04.16). Freshman Holly Williams placed first in the 1,000 free (10:22.83), the 200 back (2:06.11) and tied sophomore Lara Fuller for first
in the 200 IM (2:07.56).

Freshman Adirenne Williams earned first in the 50 free (24.38). Freshman Courtney Kos took first in the 500 free (5:08.36). Freshman Meredith Lindgreen took first in the 200 breast (2:22.64).

In the diving well senior diver Carrie Wright placed first on the 1-meter board (225.45) and freshman Lucy Hicks took first on the three meter (185.70).
