NCAA Div. I Men: Fighting Irish Down Cleveland State -- January 31, 2003
CLEVELAND, Ohio, Jan. 31. THE University of Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team cruised to a 156-85 victory over Cleveland State on Friday evening to improve their 2002-03 dual meet record to 6-6.
The Irish utilized their team strength against the Vikings, as seven different Notre Dame athletes took home at least one of the team's 10 event victories.
Nowhere was Notre Dame's strength more evident than in the diving well. Led by senior Andy Maggio, the Irish swept the first three spots off both boards to score valuable points in the dual meet. Maggio's scores ended up as 298.95 in one-meter and 301.80 in three-meter.
Tim Randolph, Doug Bauman and Matt Obringer joined Maggio as two-time winners. The three swimmers combined with Frank Krakowski to win the 400 medley relay in 3:28.47 to begin the meet. Bauman then added a victory in the 200 back (1:51.58), while Randolph picked up a win in the 100 freestyle (47.61) and Obringer touched first in the 200 freestyle (1:43.23).
Other winners for Notre Dame included Patrick Davis (1650 freestyle, 16:10.74), David Moisan (200 IM, 1:55.59), J.R. Teddy (200 butterfly, 1:53.37) and Jason Fitzpatrick (200 breast, 2:10.65).
Notre Dame continues its weekend road trip with a dual meet at St. Bonaventure on Saturday at 1 p.m.
