Georgia’s Robert Margalis Earns SEC Athlete of the Week Honors

ATHENS, Ga., Jan. 28. GEORGIA'S Robert Margalis was named the Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Week today by the league office in Birmingham, Ala.

Margalis was a double-winner for the Bulldogs last Saturday in Knoxville, claiming victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:38.93 and in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:23.80. He was also runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke behind fellow Bulldog Kyle Salyards.

A sophomore from St. Petersburg, Fla., Margalis helped the Bulldogs to a 132-111 victory against Tennessee, which was the first-ever Georgia win in Knoxville and only the second all-time victory against the Vols. Margalis helped snap Tennessee's home winning streak that began in 1998.

Margalis currently holds Georgia's top time in six events and is in the top three in five more. He was a member of Georgia's fastest 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relays this season.

"This is a terrific honor for Robert, and it's one that is well-deserved, said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "He is a hard-working athlete that makes our team better not only in dual meets but also at the championship level."

Georgia will host its final dual meet of the year Friday, Jan. 31, at 4 p.m against South Carolina.
