NCAA Div. I Women: Arizona, in Major Upset, Downs Stanford, 166.5 – 132.5

TUCSON, AZ., January 24. IT must have been the heat — or the humidity.

Whatever "it" was, Coach Frank Busch's Univeristy of Arizona Wildcat women scored a major upset here this afternoon by defeating defending Pac-10 champ and No. 4-ranked Stanford in a dual-meet at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, 166.5-132.5.

The 'Cats' victory marked the second-consecutive time the Cardinal has lost to Arizona on the road, as they were defeated two years ago here.

The loss was Stanford's second of the year as the Cardinal had bowed to top-ranked Auburn at home last November. It was also their second loss in their last 20 outings.

Stanford is 4-2 overall, 0-1 in the Pac-10. The 10th-ranked 'Cats improve to 4-1, 2-1 in Pac-10. Arizona started the meet with victories in each of the first four events to build an early lead and won 10 of 15 races overall.

Arizona was led by senior backstroker Beth Botsford, who won the 100-200 (54.89-1:58.27) and led off AU's victorious 200 medley relay. Botsford was Atlanta Olympic 100 back gold medalist and is the 'Cats record-holder in both these races

A pair of other Wildcat who made their presecne known and were instrumental in the win were sprinter Jessica Hayes, who won the 100-200 frees; and distance-specialist Emily Mason, defending Pac-10 500 free champ, who won the 500-1000 frees and was runner-up in the 200 fly.

Cardinal froshwoman Dana Kirk won a pair of races by sweeping the 100 (54.71) and 200 (2:00.42) flys with season-best and NCAA "B" qualifying times in each. If the name "Kirk" sounds familiar…it should. Dana is the younger sister of Cardinal junior Tara, American/ NCAA record-holder in the 100-200 breaststrokes.

Tara Kirk also remained unbeaten in breaststroke events this season with a victory in the 200 breast, swimming an NCAA "A" mark of 2:12.13. Kristen Caverly (400 IM, 4:21.59, NCAA "B" mark) and Lacey Boutwell (50 free, 23.58) were the other individual winners for the Cardinal.

Arizona diver Claire Febvey won both diving events, scoring 173.65 points in the one-meter and 177.10 points in the three-meter; and the 'Cats also won both relays, outscoring the Cardinal by a total of 26-8 here.

The Cardinal travels to No. 16 Arizona State on tomorrow (Jan. 25) while Arizona stays home to host Cal.
