UOP’s Smart and Mathews Named Big West Swimmers of the Week

STOCKTON, Cal., January 23. UNIVERSITY of the Pacific seniors Matt Smart (Stockton, CA) and Kristy Mathews (Walnut Creek, CA) were named Big West Conference Swimmers of the Week on Wednesday.

Smart was named along with UC Irvine's Anton Slobounov. The Tiger swimmers were honored for their outstanding performances against UCSB and USC.

Smart finished first in four individual events and two relays over the weekend against UCSB and No. 6 USC. He had top times in the 200 free (1:37.78) and 50 frees (20.82), and anchored the winning 400 free relay team against the Trojans.

Mathews won three events against conference rival UC Santa Barbara. She scored firsts in the 100 (1:06.02) and 200 breast (2:18.06), and the 200 IM (2:05.62). Mathews also performed well against USC in the 200 free (1:51.97) and 400 IM (4:25.15).

Pacific is next in action this Saturday, Feb. 1, in Stockton as the Tigers host CSU Northridge.
