NCAA Div. I: VIrginia Tecg Sweeps East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C., Jan. 20. THE Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming and diving teams picked up victories over East Carolina Saturday in Greenville.

The Hokie men defeated the Pirates 149-94, while the women picked up the victory with a score of 154-91. With the win the men improve to 3-2 on the season,
and the women's record moves to 5-2.

Highlights for the men included first-place finishes by Matt Bolen (Clifton, Va.) in both the one and three meter diving events. Freshman Anders Frahm (Copenhagan, Denmark) captured first in the 200 yard fly and the 200 yard backstroke, while junior Christian Lindberg (Woodbridge, Va.) was also a two-event winner, grabbing the top spot in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events.

The other top-finisher for the Hokies was Joey Piekarski (Mt. Airy, Md.) who won the 200 yard breaststroke. The Tech men also took the top two
spots in the 400 medley relay and first in the 400 freestyle relay.

The women's team captured first in 10 of 13 events in the win over the Pirates. Senior Jill Turner (Newark, Del.) was the women's lone two-event champion, as she won the 100 and 200 freestyle events. Jamie Spradlin (Roanoke, Va.) captured first in the 1000 freestyle, while junior Jamie Trivett (Roanoke, Va.) won the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.39.

Kelly Furlong (Springfield, Va.) and Sarah Gardner (Matthews, N.C.) occupied the top spot in the 200 meter freestyle and the 500 freestyle, respectively, while Katie Grossi (Rockville, Md.) took first in the three meter diving event. The women also also captured first in the 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

The Hokies will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 25, for a tri-meet with West Virginia and American. The meet begins at 1 p.m., at the War Memorial Pool.
