NCAA Div. I Men: Northwestern Hammers Illinois-Chicago

EVANSTON, Ill., Jan. 17. IT has been nearly three long months, but the Northwestern men's swimming and diving team has finally found its way back into the dual meet win column.

After dropping six consecutive duals, the Wildcats posted a resounding 194-96 victory over cross-town rival Illinois-Chicago Friday night at the Norris Aquatics Center.

The victory improves NU's dual record to 3-6 on the season. UIC falls to 2-6 with the loss. The Wildcats' last dual meet victories were Oct. 25 when they defeated UW-Milwaukee and Toledo in a three-team
dual.

Northwestern only dropped one event in which it did not exhibition a swimmer or was disqualified. Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prepartatory), Louis Torres (Morton Grove, Ill./Niles West), Mike Oxman (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) and Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) each won two events for the Wildcats.

O'Connor improved on his NCAA "B" Cut time in the 200 butterfly by finishing first in a season-best time of 1:46.75. He also captured the title in the 100 fly in 49.11.

Torres swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 57.37 and the 200 in 2:05.33.

Swanson touched the wall in both the backstoke events. He won the 100 by nearly five seconds (50.98), while taking the 200 title by over four seconds (1:53.70). Oxman swept both diving events, winning the 1-meter with a score of 288.90 and the 3-meter with a 302.78 mark.

Northwestern also got victories out of Brian Davis (Issaquah, Wash./Issaquah) in the 1000 freestyle (9:27.57), Dan Willams (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) in the 500 free (4:43.79), Mike Shue (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) in the 200 free (1:42.84), Shelby Clark
(Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) in the 100 free (47.02) and Mark Hamming in the 200 individual medley (1:51.21).

The Wildcats finished first in the 400 medley relay and the 400 free relay, but exhibitioned and were disqualified from the events, respectively.

Northwestern returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 when it travels to Notre Dame for a dual with the Fighting Irish.
