NCAA Div. I Women: Notre Dame Leads Illinois After Day One of Two-Day Dual Meet

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., Jan. 17. THE University of Notre Dame women's swimming and diving team jumped out to a 64-46 lead over Illinois after the first session of a dual meet with the Illini on Friday evening.

There was no men's meet, as Illinois abolished its men's team a decade ago.

The Irish were able to post three event victories in the first day of competition. The meet also features Michigan, but Notre Dame and Michigan will not be scored against each other since they have a dual meet coming up on February 1.

The ND 200 freestyle relay team of Sarah Alwen, Danielle Hulick, Kristen Peterson and Heidi Hendrick began the evening with a second-place finish (1:38.15). The 'B' team of Courtney Campbell, Amy Deger, Laurie Musgrave and Georgia Healey (1:41.85) finished sixth.

Event three was the 200 IM, and Notre Dame's individual medley specialist stepped up to post the first Irish event victory. Marie Labosky fought off two Wolverine swimmers in second and third to touch first in 2:05.76. Teammate Lisa Garcia was fifth in 2:08.77.

The highly competitive 50-yard freestyle was next on the schedule and junior Danielle Hulick stepped up seize Notre Dame's second victory in 24.22. Heidi Hendrick ended up fifth in 24.75.

In the lone diving event on Friday, junior Meghan Perry-Eaton posted an impressive victory off the one-meter board, taking first with 331.58 points.

The 400 medley relay ended competition on Friday night and the Irish team of Hulick, Laurie Musgrave, Garcia and Hendrick finished second in 3:54.81.

The meet continues tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 18) at 10 a.m.
