Flash!! St. John's in New York to Drop Swimming, 4 Other Sports -- December 13, 2002

NEW YORK, NY., Dec. 13. ST. JOHN'S University is planning on dropping five sports, including men's and women's swimming, men's football, men's track and field (indoors and outdoors) and men's cross-country, according to a report this morning on WFAN, a major NY radio station.

Men's and Women's Swimming is being discontinued after the 2003-2004 season.

The school decided its money would be better spent by bringing back the men's lacrosse team and giving the women's swimming scholarships to the "dance team." (Wgen did dance become a sport?)

St. John's has been a very competitive program in the Big East the past several years, with the men finishing as high as second in 2001, losing only to 18th-ranked Pittsburgh. That same year, head coach John Skudin was named Big East Coach of the Year.

St. John's will be dropping from 22 to 17 sports (including dance).
